Men's basketball preps for Saturday contest against West Georgia

FGCU aims to bounce back on Saturday at Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast men's basketball's (7-11, 1-4 ASUN) four game homestand will come to an end at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 17, when the Eagles take on West Georgia (9-8, 3-2 ASUN) at Alico Arena.

With a double-digit scoring effort on Saturday, Rahmir Barno would have more double-digit scoring games in the 2025-26 season than in his previous two years combined (13 as a freshman and sophomore, 13 as a junior so far). The second leading passer in the ASUN is also one assist away from 100 on the campaign. The point guard also leads FGCU in minutes per game at 31.4.

Isaiah Malone led FGCU with 17 points and eight rebounds on a perfect 11-for-11 night at the free throw line on Thursday against Queens. Rahmir Barno added 15 points and Darren Williams scored ten. As a team, the Eagles went 22-for-22 from the free throw line on the night.

That mark stands as the best free throw shooting performance in program history. FGCU had four previous occurrences of a perfect free throw shooting night as a team leading into the night, most recently a 9-for-9 game against Bellarmine on February 10, 2024; none of those games had more than ten made free throws. Barno made all five of his shots at the free throw line, Williams knocked down both of his and Tristen Guillouette went 4-for-4.

Queens jumped out to an early lead, but the Eagles battled back, eventually taking the lead after a 12-0 run that spanned the first and second half. The game went back-and-forth for most of the second half before the Royals went on a 10-2 run in the closing minutes to secure the 85-74 victory.

West Georgia opened ASUN play 3-0 with home wins over Bellarmine, 87-85, and EKU, 88-76, and a road win at North Florida, 85-73. The Wolves were routed by Jacksonville, 75-43, and fell on Thursday to Stetson, 95-86. UWG's best nonconference win was a 93-89 2OT victory over Troy. They fell to the lone nonconference common opponent with the Eagles, 91-85 to West Georgia. Nebraska, UCLA, Georgia Tech and Georgia were the power conference schools on the Wolves' early season slate.

West Georgia has three players that average double-digit scoring, led by Shelton Williams-Dryden, who scores 19.8 points and averages 9.2 rebounds per game. Williams-Dryden scored 31 points for his second 30-point game in conference play in the loss to Stetson on Thursday. Josh Smith scores 16.4 points per game, and Chas Lewis adds 12.8 points and 2.9 assists per game. Kolten Griffin also averages 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game; JaVar Daniel blocks 1.7 shots per game.

FGCU leads the all-time series with West Georgia 3-1. The lone Wolves win came in 2006 in Carrollton; the Eagles swept UWG in 2025 in its inaugural season in Division I. The last time the two teams met, Rahmir Barno scored 13 to go with six rebounds and six assists, and Michael Duax had a ten point, four rebound outing.
