Men's and women's cross country set to compete at Southern Showcase

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University's men's and women's cross-country teams will continue the season Friday morning at the Southern Showcase, hosted by Jacksonville State.

The meet is highly competitive and will have 50 teams on the men's side, including top 10 ranked teams in the South Region: Middle Tennessee (6), FSU (8) and Georgia Tech (10).

The women's side will have 54 competing schools that include No. 1 ranked Alabama, UCF, South Alabama, Auburn and Mississippi State to name a few.

The men's 8K is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. ET. followed by the women's race at 9:30 a.m. at John Hunt Park.

The Eagles are coming off a very impressive season opener at the Florida Intercollegiate Invitational, hosted by North Florida. Ozia Trujillo set a program record in 5K with a time of 17:07.7 seconds.

Siyabonga Mokgothu led the FGCU men's team, placing second in the 8K with a time of 24:46.5 — the eighth-fastest mark in program history.

The FGCU women scored 90 points for fourth place. Florida won the team event with 26 points, FSU was second with 52 and UCF placed third with 84.

The men's team scored 88 points to finish third. North Florida won the title with 41 points and Florida was second with 54.
