FORT MYERS, Fla. — Erika Zschuppe converted a second-half penalty kick Thursday, but Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer fell 6-1 to LSU at Pickering Field.
Zschuppe scored in the 60th minute to bring the Eagles (1-1) within 4-1, calmly finishing from the spot after LSU goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian was whistled for a foul in the box. It was Zschuppe's third goal of the season in front of a 1,000+ home crowd.
LSU (2-1) built its early and commanding lead courtesy of breakaway goals from Ava Galligan, scored in the 10th and 26th minutes. The Tigers then struck twice in quick succession after halftime, with Kelsey Major finding the net in the 48th minute and followed by Morgan Witz less than a minute later to take a 4-0 advantage.
After Zschuppe's penalty, LSU answered again with goals from Senai Rogers in the 62nd minute and Ryann Denecour in the 65th to put the Eagles away.
FGCU created chances with Lily Borders and Kendal Gargiula, both forcing saves in the opening minutes. Megan Morgan added two shots as the Eagles totaled eight attempts on the night, three of which were on target. LSU fired 20 shots and connected on six.
Madara Matrevica started in goal and recorded three saves before giving way to Danyelle Dorn in the second half, who also stopped three Tiger shots.
FGCU rests its wings for a week before traveling to Florida Atlantic next Thursday, Aug. 28, for a matchup in Boca Raton, Florida. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
