FORT MYERS, Fla. — Erika Zschuppe scored twice in the opening five minutes Sunday to spark Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer to a 6-0 win over Webber International at Pickering Field.
Zschuppe opened the scoring barrage in the 2nd minute off an assist from Megan Morgan, then added her second less than two minutes later with help from Lily Borders. Pitt transfer Ava Boyd soon emerged as a threat of her own.
Boyd followed Zschuppe with two goals in the first half, pushing the Eagles' lead to 4-0 at the break. Her first career goal with Green and Blue came at the 38th minute, before sneaking in another in the 40th minute.
Kendal Gargiula tallied the Eagles' fifth goal of the day in the 67th minute, and Sophia Holtzman capped the scoring in the 85th with an assist from Lindsey Saad.
FGCU (1-0) outshot Webber International 35-3, putting 21 attempts on target. The 35 shots Sunday tied the fifth most in the program's single-game history. Boyd led the Eagles with eight shots, including six on goal, while Zschuppe registered seven shots and five on frame.
FGCU goalkeepers Madara Matrevica and Danyelle Dorn combined for the shutout without facing a shot on goal. Matrevica earned the starting nod between the pipes. Zschuppe had multiple opportunities searching for her hat trick of her career, but the Webber keeper Francesa Magnotti finished with 14 saves to limit the damage.
The Eagles also held a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks. FGCU returns to the pitch Thursday, Aug. 21, to host LSU at Pickering Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
For the first time in program history, FGCU is offering fall season tickets for its soccer programs, with packages starting at $60. Fans who purchase season tickets for either the men's or women's soccer teams will receive a season ticket combo for both programs.
