A battle between pitching staffs came down to one pitch as Florida Gulf Coast University dropped a 2-0 decision to Florida Atlantic Tuesday night in baseball action from Boca Raton, Florida.
It was a game with just nine hits combined between the two sides, with FGCU out-hitting the hosts 5-4. Five different Eagles had a hit in the game, but the squad was unable to put together back-to-back hits the whole game.
The same could be said on the other side as well as FGCU's pitching stymied the Owls offensively. FAU (32-16) would take the lead after a 12-pitch at bat with two men out in the seventh ended in a walk. The next batter would take a 1-1 pitch out to dead center field for a 2-0 lead for FAU.
Anthony Ursitti started for the Eagles and worked two scoreless innings.
Chase Kriebel had a bounce-back outing with a solid inning of relief.
Jordan Vera allowed just one walk in two innings of action, while
Dylan Cheeley (2-2) gave up a lone hit in his two innings of work.
Ethan Mattison pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout on his ledger.
Jake McKee,
Harrison Povey,
Jon Embury and
Robert Moya each had a single for FGCU.
Mac Moise collected a double for FGCU's extra-base hit.
The Eagles (21-26) will be back in action this Friday in Carrollton, Georgia as they take on West Georgia in Atlantic Sun Conference Graphite Division play. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
