FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University baseball fell 13-7 in the final game of its home conference series Sunday against visiting Jacksonville University at Swanson Stadium.
Mac Moise wasted no time putting FGCU (12-20, 4-8 ASUN) on the board early in the bottom of the first with a two-out, two-run shot that scored
Robert Moya, making it 2-0 Eagles with his sixth homer of the year.
The Eagles added to their lead in the second when they plated four runs on five hits. FGCU started with a single to center, but a double play helped the Dolphins get two fast outs.
Jon Embury looked to keep things alive as he singled to center, then moved to second when
Jake Mummau walked.
Jake McKee's RBI double down the left field line scored Embury to push the lead to 3-0 and sent Mummau to third. With runners in scoring position,
Harrison Povey decided to use the right field line for a double of his own to score both runners and make it 5-0. Before the inning ended, Moya got in on the action with a single down the left-field line to score Povey to push the lead to 6-0.
Seven of FGCU's 11 hits Sunday came in the first two frames. In FGCU's series-winning walk-off on Saturday, the Eagles had only three hits.
The bats went cold again. After five straight scoreless innings, Jacksonville (17-14, 7-5 ASUN) scored three in the sixth and plated four runs in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead.
The Dolphins added five runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth to push their lead to 13-6, all unanswered runs. The Eagles got a run back in the ninth off a solo home run by Moise to make it 13-7 before the game ended. It was his second home run of the game.
FGCU starter
Ryland Bozenhard went five and two-thirds, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out a game-high six. Reliever
Logan Baisley took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. He allowed four runs on four hits in a third of an inning.
Moya paced all hitters with three hits while registering a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Moise and Embury combined going 4-for-9 with two home runs, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
FGCU is back home Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. when it hosts Florida International University.
