FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University head men's basketball coach
Pat Chambers is pleased to announce the signing of J.R. Konieczny to the roster for the 2025-26 season. Konieczny is transferring to FGCU from Notre Dame.
"J.R is a versatile guard," said Chambers. "His combination of size, shooting ability and ball-handling skills allows him to play multiple positions."
Konieczny played at Notre Dame for four seasons, seeing action in 71 games. He played in 62 games over his final two seasons with the Fighting Irish, averaging 6.0 points per contest. He saved one of his best performances in a Notre Dame uniform for last when he recorded 13 points and a season-high eight boards in a four overtime win over Cal, 112-110, in the regular season finale. Against Pitt in the regular season, J.R. scored all 10 of his points in the second half, including a perfect 6-of-6 stretch at the charity stripe in the final 40 seconds to help the Irish to a 76-72 victory. He'd also dish out a pair of assists in a win for the Irish in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament first round over Pitt.
"He's a veteran player that plays with passion," Chambers said. "He has an incredible work ethic and is a fierce competitor. We're thrilled to have him join our team."
The newest addition to the FGCU roster is from South Bend, Indiana, where he would play for his hometown university. He was nominated to play in the McDonald's All-American Game as a high school senior at St. Joseph High School. He finished fifth in voting for the Indiana Mr. Basketball award in 2021. He was considered a four-star prospect by ESPN.com coming out of high school.
J.R. is the son of Debbie and Doug Konieczny. Both of his siblings played basketball at St. Joseph High School, with his sister Nicole helping the school to a Class 3A state championship before playing D-I college basketball for Valparaiso.
