Softball ventures outside of Florida for the first time this year

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University softball will venture outside of the Sunshine State for the first time this season to face the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Friday and Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. This is the second straight season the Eagles have not left Florida until April.

Friday will be a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. with a single game on Saturday at noon. FGCU shutout the Royals for the entire series, throwing the first seven inning no-hitter in the DI era, only allowing seven hits over the series.

The Eagles are coming off a series sweep against the West Georgia Wolves. The series started with an 8-0 run-rule victory in the first game of the opening double header. The next two game were played close with FGCU coming away with 9-7 win and a 4-3 win to secure the sweep.

Emily Chiarella is currently on a six-game hitting streak, with hits in 10 of her past 11 games. Two of her past four games have been multi-hit games.

Sophie Wylie continues her power surge with her second straight series with a home run, leading qualified batters with a .455 slugging percentage. Maddox Thomas saw her 14 game on-base streak end over the weekend, but she still leads the team with a .426 on base percentage.

The Green and Blue continue the road stretch next week with the first rematch of the season against Jacksonville on April 12 and 13.
