FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University baseball won its second series of the season Sunday by delivering a 7-5 win in game three against Bethune-Cookman at Swanson Stadium.
Harrison Povey swung a flaming hot bat all weekend long, seeing beach balls up at the plate. Povey hit two home runs on Friday, belted another on Saturday and hit his fourth homer of the series and eighth of the season in the third inning Sunday. Povey's sweet swing of the bat tied the game at two runs apiece as Bethune-Cookman pounced first in the second with a 2-run blast of their own.
The Eagles surrendered the lead in the fourth with BCU's second round tripper of the day, but the Wildcats' lead would be short-lived once again.
FGCU responded with a four-spot in the fifth to secure a 6-3 advantage. FGCU plated the tying run on a wild pitch, and Aidan Corn's 2-run single to right center broke the tie.
In the sixth, Jeter Polledo's triple off the wall allowed the Wildcats to claw back to within one, 6-5. Polledo finished a double away from recording the cycle. FGCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of an RBI single from Nathan Gagnon.
Ryland Bozenhard kept the Wildcats from reaching base in the final inning to earn the save. Ethan Mattison was awarded the victory for FGCU. The Wildcats' starter threw two pitches Sunday before leaving the game with an upper body injury.
FGCU travels to Miami on Tuesday to face the FIU Panthers for a midweek contest. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
