FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team fell 5-2 in conference action to the University of West Georgia this afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
FGCU (8-15, 1-4 ASUN) threatened with runners in scoring position in the first three innings but was unable to capitalize until the fourth. It started with Aiden Corn walked and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt. He later came around to score off
Connor Fosnow's RBI single through the left side to make it 1-0 before the inning ended.
West Georgia (12-9, 3-2 ASUN) tied the game in the fifth and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, but the lead did not last long. This time Corn singled to start FGCU's half of the sixth and then was moved to second off another sacrifice bunt. Corn then crossed the plate when
Vincent Samuel doubled to center to tie things at two.
The Wolves responded in the top of the seventh as they plated two runs on three hits to make it a 4-2 game. West Georgia added an insurance run in the ninth to go up 5-2.
The West Georgia bullpen allowed two walks over the final three innings to secure the victory and take the series.
Right-handed starter
Ashton Pocol allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while striking out a season-high nine. Reliever
Jordan Vera took the loss to drop to 1-5 on the season allowing two runs on three hits in a third of an inning.
Harrison Povey paced FGCU at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double. Teammate Samuel had the team's only other extra-base hit (double) while driving in a run.
Corn, Fosnow,
Mac Moise,
Evan Dempsey, and
Jake Mummau all tallied a hit apiece while Corn scored the team's two runs.
FGCU is back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. when it hosts West Georgia in the final game of the series.
