Eagles fall at Hurricanes

Florida Gulf Coast University baseball fell 14-6 on the road to the University of Miami on Wednesday in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Eagles are now 4-4 on the season while the Hurricanes are 8-1.

Miami jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first, but FGCU got one of the three runs back in the top of the second. It all started when Mac Moise walked with one down and later moved to second when Javier Gorostola singled on an infield hit to second. The Eagles then loaded the bases when Vincent Samuel walked on seven pitches. Moise later scored from third off Jake Mummau's RBI single to second to make it 3-1 before the inning ended.

The Hurricanes added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to make it, 5-1. Then after both teams went scoreless in the third, Miami pushed five runs across in the bottom of the fourth off four hits and an error to push its lead to, 10-1.

With two down in the top of the sixth, Gorostola homered to left center on a 2-0 count to make it 10-2, but Miami answered as it added a run in its half of the sixth.

Both teams added a pair of runs in the seventh to make it a 13-4 Hurricane lead headed to the eighth. FGCU tacked on two more runs in the eighth to cut the lead to seven, but Miami was able to get one of the two runs back in its half of the eighth to make a 14-6 lead.

The Eagles as a team registered 10 hits with one home run and three walks.

Gorostola finished the night going 3-for-4 with a home run, RBI, and a run scored. Robert Moya was the only other Eagle to finish with multiple hits as he went 2-for-5 with a team-high two RBIs.

Five other FGCU players each finished a hit apiece.

FGCU starter Jordan Vera took the loss to go to 0-1 on the season. He went three and two-thirds of an inning allowing eight runs (four earned) while striking out a game-high three.

The final three Eagle relievers made up of Lucas Chantres, Hunter Possehl, and Mattox Meeks combined going three innings, one hit, a walk, a run, and three strikeouts.
