FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team scored six unanswered runs Sunday to win 10-6 over visiting Stony Brook University. The win completed the series sweep of the Seawolves and extended the Eagles' win streak to three.
Stony Brook took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the third, but FGCU (4-3) was able to cut the lead to three as it plated a pair of runs on two hits. The Eagles then pushed another run across in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Seawolves (3-3) in the sixth used a hit, a pair of stolen bases and an error to tack on their sixth run of the game to go up, 6-3. But in the bottom half of the sixth, Jake Mummau walked and later moved to third when Evan Dempsey singled to right. A wild pitch allowed Mummau to score to make it 6-4, while Dempsey took second. Dempsey then moved up another 90 feet on a flyout to center. He later scored courtesy of Robert Moya's RBI single up the middle to make it a one-run game.
With the momentum on its side after Stony Brook left a pair of runners stranded in the top of the sixth, FGCU opened up its half of the frame when Mac Moise walked on five pitches. He later moved to third when Vincent Samuel doubled down the left-field line on the first pitch he saw. Both runners scored when Javier Gorostola singled up the middle on a 2-0 count to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, up 7-6.
FGCU added a pair of runs in the seventh to push its lead to three and then another run in the eighth off a home run to left center by Moya to make it, 10-6.
Moya finished the day going 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, a run scored and a home run. His home run was his second of the season to put him tied for first on the team with Harrison Povey.
Gorostola was the only other FGCU player to register two hits and was 1 of 3 players to finish with a double and a pair of RBIs. Moise tallied a pair of RBIs and a run scored while recording a double. Mummau finished with a team-high three walks.
Reliever Rylan Bozenhard picked up his first win of the season. The right-hander scattered four hits over three innings of work while striking out two and not allowing a run. Closer Leo Giannoni earned his second save of the season after coming in the eighth inning to pitch the last inning and two-thirds.
FGCU is back in action Wednesday, Feb. 26 when it heads to Coral Gables to face the University of Miami. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
