FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University baseball secured the series victory over Stony Brook on Saturday with an 8-5 win in game two at Swanson Stadium. The Eagles go for the sweep of the Seawolves on Sunday at 11 a.m.
FGCU (3-3) got the ball rolling in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs off a Mac Moise and Javier Gorostola RBI single. Both scoring plays occurred with two outs. The Eagles pushed across two more runs in the third as Gorostola produced another RBI single, and Jaret Nelson belted a two-out RBI double to left center field. FGCU led 4-0 through three complete.
Stony Brook (3-3) tied the game in the top of the fourth with a four-run frame. The Seawolves scored their four runs on four hits and one FGCU fielding error. All four runs in the inning were unearned.
FGCU responded with its third crooked number of the day, retaking a 6-4 lead. Harrison Poevy hit a home run, his second of the year, to center to put the Eagles back in front, and Gorostola drove in his third RBI of the day with a double down the left-field line. FGCU scored at least one run in four straight innings.
The Seawolves pulled to within one in the fifth, 6-5, but FGCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the same frame and one more in the sixth. Both teams remained scoreless the rest of the way.
FGCU registered 13 hits Saturday for its second straight win and first series win of the season. Gorostola, Moise and Robert Moya produced multiple hits. Gorostola finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Moya showed off his wheels by scoring from second three times. Jake Mummau roped a triple off the wall.
Preston Rogers was credited with the win, and Leo Giannoni picked up the save for the Eagles. FGCU starter Levent Eldem recorded five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
