FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University softball will begin its second week of softball with a double header at USF on Wednesday before returning to Fort Myers for the FGCU Invitational from Feb 14-16.
The Invitational will feature some of the top teams in the country including Omaha, who has received votes in all of the major polls. The Mavericks are bolstered by transfer Madia Groff, the 10
th best pitcher in the country according to D1Softball.com. Groff joins FGCU's
Allison Sparkman on the list. Seton Hall and Wisconsin also make the trip south to Fort Myers to escape the frigid northerly temperatures.
The doubleheader against USF is the continuation of a string of FGCU and USF playing each other multiple times in the same season with the Eagles and Bulls playing at least two games against each other every year since 2001.
The Bulls lead the all-time series 16-6. Since 2001, the Bulls are 7-2 but last year's double header was split with the FGCU win coming off a pitching gem by
Angelina Bonilla and a two-run homer from
Neely Peterson.
Tiffany Meek had an exceptional opening weekend and currently leads the team in at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, walks and stolen bases. Meek's four steals led the team that set the record for most stolen bases in the Kickoff Classic with 14. Meek is currently on pace to set the single-season DI FGCU stolen base record.
Sparkman continues to dazzle in the circle with a 1.05 WHIP and 1.40 ERA. The sophomore, nationally renowned pitcher struck out 14 over the weekend in which the Eagles pitching staff did not allow a home run.
Avery Viancos and
Olivia Black are on milestone watch with Viancos just one hit from 100 for her career and Black three steals from 50 for her career.
