FGCU Drops Season Opener to Davidson

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team opened their 2025-26 season on Saturday night at Alico Arena, falling 77-51 to the Davidson Wildcats.

Breakdown
RECORDS: Florida Gulf Coast 0-1, 0-0 ASUN | Davidson 2-1, 0-0 A10
SCORE: Florida Gulf Coast 51 | Davidson 77
LOCATION: Alico Arena | Fort Myers, Fla.

How It Happened
First Quarter: FGCU started strong, pushing the pace and scoring efficiently in the paint. Early baskets from Sinai Douglas, Anna Mortag, and Nay Staton helped the Eagles grab an 18-15 lead late in the quarter. Douglas knocked down a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to give FGCU a 20-19 advantage after one.

Second Quarter: The Eagles' offensive rhythm slowed as the Wildcats made defensive adjustments. Despite solid ball movement and rebounding, FGCU managed only three field goals in the quarter. Davidson took advantage, using a late run to build a 41-28 halftime lead.

Third Quarter - FGCU showed resilience coming out of the locker room. Douglas continued to attack the basket, while Jalei Pillow and Mortag added timely inside scores to cut the deficit to single digits midway through the frame. However, the Eagles couldn't sustain the momentum and trailed 57-44 heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter - The Eagles continued to fight but couldn't get shots to fall down the stretch. The Wildcats finished the game on a strong run to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season.

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Raina Harmon - "It's gut check time. The season's here, and we never said we were going to go undefeated. We talk about progress over perfection, and that starts now. We didn't protect the nest tonight, but the question is, what does tomorrow look like? We'll watch the film, get better, and keep growing through the season."
