FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast men's soccer fell short in an intense regular season finale match against Jacksonville, 2-1.
The loss moves FGCU (6-7-3, 2-3-1) down to a tie for third in the ASUN Graphite Division standings behind Jacksonville (5-7-4, 2-2-2). The Eagles finished tied in the ASUN with Stetson, which owns the tiebreaker for the postseason due to goal differential.
Romain Spailier scored off a Felix Kogler assist in the 12th minute to give Jacksonville an early lead.
Edson Murguia scored the equalizer in the 34th minute for his fourth goal of the season. The Eagle's defense played strong for the next 50 minutes without allowing a shot on goal.
Jacksonville pressured in the final 10 minutes, collecting four shots in a four-minute span, the last a goal by Iver Skorve on a pass from Logan Hall in the 85th minute with 5:04 to play.
A red card in the 87th minute was assessed to the Jacksonville bench, but the Eagles' only shot in the final minutes by
Caio Oliveira missed to the right with less than two minutes to play.
With
Oliver Weng in goal for FGCU, both teams finished with two saves, all in the first half, while the Dolphins outshot the Eagles, 13-8.
