FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball earned its first sweep victory of the season Friday evening, defeating West Georgia 3-0. The Eagles extend their Atlantic Sun Conference record to 3-0.
Julija Grubisic Cabo and
Barbara Koehler each had 10 kills to lead the Eagles (8-5, 3-0 ASUN), while
Abby Toeniskoetter and
Ava Smith added eight apiece. Setter
Eliska Vytiskova ran the offense with 18 assists, four aces and also recorded five digs.
FGCU hit .352 as a team, while holding the Wolves (2-14,0-3 ASUN) to a .112 percentage overall. The Eagles dominated the service line, 10-2, went 7-4 in blocks and finished with 43 kills compared to West Georgia's 23.
In the first set, FGCU built a 20-10 lead behind three aces from Vytiskova and five kills from Grubisic Cabo. West Georgia couldn't respond, and the Eagles took the set, 25-14.
In the second set, FGCU again seized control, jumping to a 20-14 advantage aided by back-to-back aces from Toeniskoetter and three more kills. The Green & Blue then closed out the set with a five-point run.
West Georgia held its first lead of the match early in the third set, going up 6-1. The Eagles answered with an 18-8 run highlighted by three kills from
Katie Gielas to take a 19-15 lead. FGCU added five unanswered points, including three kills by Koehler, to push the lead to 24-15.
FGCU sealed the match with a 25-17 victory, capping off "Mean Girls Night."
The Eagles will conclude their homestand Sunday, facing Queens University (N.C.) at 1 p.m.
