FGCU stays perfect in ASUN with 3-1 win over Royals

FORT MYERS, Fla.Julija Grubisic Cabo delivered a career-high 19 kills as Florida Gulf Coast University defeated Queens (N.C.) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles extended their Atlantic Sun Conference record to 4-0.

Barbara Koehler posted a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs. Abby Toeniskoetter recorded a match-high six blocks, and Eliska Vytiskova dished out 30 assists. FGCU totaled 63 digs compared with Queens' 44, and the Eagles dominated the service line with seven aces.

"I thought our offense was really good today," said head coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen. "We found points in all three spots on the net. We got off to a slow start but made some adjustments and found a way to come back and get the win."

Set one stayed competitive; the teams were tied 17-17 before the Royals (11-6, 2-2 ASUN) rallied 8-4 to take it, 25-21.

Set two followed a similar pattern, with Queens leading 20-19 before FGCU (9-5, 4-0 ASUN) scored six straight  aided by two aces from Anna Marzella  to win 25-20.

In the third, Green & Blue took control, building a 21-15 lead behind six impressive kills from Koehler, then closed it out 25-17 with a 4-2 run.

In the fourth, FGCU jumped ahead 21-16  again featuring six kills from Grubisic Cabo. Queens (N.C.) mounted a 6-3 run to close to 24-22, but FGCU answered and wrapped up the set 25-22.

The Eagles will play again Friday at the University of Central Arkansas; first serve is set for 7 p.m.
