FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast women's soccer's regular season will come to a close at 5 p.m. Saturday.
FGCU will square off with Stetson at Pickering Field in what will also be the final ASUN women's soccer game of the regular season, with the other five games all set for earlier in the day. The first time FGCU and Stetson met, the Eagles took a 3-1 win at Stetson behind goals from Zschuppe, Gargiula and
Keira Morgan.
Senior midfielder
Erika Zschuppe is closing her collegiate soccer career while playing the best soccer of her life. The Kirtland, Ohio, product leads the NCAA with 19 goals on the season. Zschuppe's Sunday goal gave her nine consecutive games with a goal dating back to Sept. 11. That mark is the longest active goal scoring streak in the NCAA this season.
Colorado's Hope Leyba (17) and Notre Dame's Izzy Engle (16) are the only players in the country within three goals of Zschuppe. Zschuppe also leads the country in total points with 40, although her margin is slightly slimmer in that category. Engle has 38, Xavier's Samantha Erbach has 37 and Leyba has 35.
The most consecutive games with a goal in FGCU women's soccer history belongs to Tabby Tindell, who also holds the program record for goals and goals in a single season. Tindell netted a goal in ten consecutive outings in 2016. Zschuppe's nine straight games with a goal is the second longest streak in Eagles' women's soccer history.
Zschuppe is also within striking distance of Tindell's single-season program record for goals (20) with the regular season finale and the ASUN Championship still to play.
Senior forward
Kendal Gargiula has had an excellent season in her own right. Her seven goals are second on the team and are tied for fifth in the ASUN. The North Fort Myers native also has three assists. Zschuppe and Gargiula's 26 combined goals is the most by any duo in the NCAA.
FGCU clinched a postseason berth with last Thursday's win over West Georgia, joining Lipscomb in the ASUN Championship. Jacksonville, North Florida and EKU have also since clinched . The Eagles control their own postseason destiny, with a 1-0-1 record against the Dolphins. A win or tie on Saturday would earn FGCU a Graphite Division championship.
