FORT MYERS, Fla. — Florida Gulf Coast University's volleyball team fell 3–2 against Austin Peay on Sunday afternoon, dropping its second Atlantic Sun Conference match of the season. The win marked the first victory for the Governors over FGCU.
Despite the loss, several Eagles (11-7, 6-2 ASUN) posted strong performances.
Julija Grubisic Cabo notched her eighth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 12 digs.
Ava Smith achieved a career-high 13 kills, while freshman
Katie Gielas also reached a personal best with 12 kills.
Abby Toeniskoetter contributed 10 kills, four blocks and 13 digs, and
Camila Soto added eight kills while hitting .429. Setter
Hanna Borer recorded 33 assists, matching her season best.
FGCU came out strong in the opening set, hitting .286 behind efficient play from Grubisic Cabo and Smith to take a 25-18 win. Austin Peay (4-16, 2-6 ASUN) answered with a 25-20 victory in the second set, limiting FGCU to .133 hitting to even the match.
The Eagles regained control in the third, collecting 19 kills and hitting .286 to win 25-21 and move ahead 2-1. Austin Peay refused to fade, edging FGCU 25-23 in the fourth after nine ties and four lead changes to force a decisive fifth set.
In the final frame, the Governors surged ahead early and never looked back, closing the match with a .409 hitting percentage to claim the 15-11 victory.
FGCU remains at home to host Florida International (12–8, 6–2 CUSA) at 6 p.m. for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.
