Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball passed a Thursday road test at Queens University of Charlotte, winning 69-47 at Curry Arena.
"A lot of credit to Queens," head coach Chelsea Lyles said. "They played really well. Happy we were able to pull a few runs together to get a tough win on the road."
Thursday's victory marked the seventh straight win for FGCU (14-3) as the Eagles remained undefeated in ASUN play at 5-0. FGCU also improved to 5-0 all-time in the series against Queens and has now won 38 straight games against ASUN opponents.
FGCU ultimately walked away with a 22-point victory Thursday but only led the Royals by eight, 36-28, at halftime. FGCU has defeated all five of its ASUN opponents this season by double-digits.
The Preseason ASUN Player of the Year, Emani Jefferson, picked up her third foul early in the second quarter and had to watch the remainder of the second period from the bench. Coach Lyles was forced to sit her out to preserve offensive opportunities down the stretch. By the time Jefferson picked up her third foul, the Miami native had made the lone two 3-pointers for the Eagles.
Queens chipped away at the deficit without FGCU's floor leader and one of the nation's best shooters by field goal percentage on the court. Queens used an 18-3 run to pull within one, 23-22. Skyler Gill put a halt to the new-gained momentum and stopped the bleeding with a layup.
FGCU continued to find offensive production elsewhere as Khamari Mitchell-Steen provided a team and game-high 13 points. ASUN Newcomer of the Week, Lauryn Taylor, turned in 12 points and 14 rebounds for her third double-double effort of the season, and Cerina Rolle added another 10 on the scoreboard. Defensively, FGCU did not falter, now limiting 16 of its 17 opponents this season to 58 points or less.
The Eagles began to find their rhythm once again at the 2:15 mark of the second period when a perfect screen from Taylor and Rolle opened up Cairns for a knockdown three, extending FGCU's lead to 32-24. Entering the day, Cairn's shooting percentage from 3-point land ranked No. 23 nationally. FGCU finished with seven made triples.
Coach Lyles rolled the dice and started Jefferson right away in the third quarter. Jefferson answered the call to help fuel a 5-0 run to begin the period and cap the same quarter with a 7-0 run. FGCU glided into the fourth up 16, 56-40.
A 15-0 FGCU run, spanning from the end of the third and into the fourth, secured a 64-40 advantage for the Green and Blue. Another Gill spin move in the paint gifted FGCU its largest lead of the night.
Undefeated FGCU closes out its four-game road swing Saturday at West Georgia. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
