Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer dropped its third straight match Thursday to begin the season, suffering a 3-0 defeat at Iowa in Iowa City.
"Tough result for us but I liked the improvement in our team." head Jim Blankenship said. "I feel like we'll start to get one soon."
FGCU struggled to keep possession and produce any offensive rhythm as the Hawkeyes held the Eagles to just three shots. Katelyn Kauffman recorded FGCU's lone shot on goal. Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Midfielder of the Year Erika Zschuppe and Preseason Player of the Year Ashley Labbe were credited with the other two shot attempts for FGCU.
Iowa peppered the goal Thursday, firing 26 shots with 18 on goal. Goalkeeper Olivia Molina corralled a career-high 15 saves, which is also a single-game program record. Molina led the ASUN with 21 saves entering the night. Iowa, who was ranked No. 24 last week, entered the match receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.
Molina tallied her sixth save in the first half before Iowa finally broke through in the 24th minute. The Hawkeyes would find the back of the net twice in the second half, in the 47th and the 81st to improve to 2-0-2. The win marked win No. 100 for Hawkeye head coach Dave Dilanni.
FGCU shifts its focus to Sunday as the Eagles face another midwest foe, DePaul at 1:30 p.m. on FloSports.
