Eagles attract East Carolina transfer Karina Gordon

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball added its sixth transfer Saturday with the official signing of Karina Gordon from East Carolina.

"Karina is an explosive athlete and an excellent shooter," head coach Karl Smesko said. "She gained a lot of valuable experience as a freshman at East Carolina. She has the ability to excel in our style of play."

Gordon joins fellow incoming transfers Skyar Gill (North Alabama/Kansas), Lauryn Taylor (Francis Marion), Alahna Paige (Daemen University), Anna Mortag (Butler) and Khamari Michhell-Steen (Northern Kentucky). Of the six transfers, Gordon marks the fourth official DI transfer to commit to the FGCU winning tradition.

Gordon appeared in 33 games for the Pirates, making 24 starts as a talented freshman. She averaged 25 minutes on the floor, 6.4 points, and 1.9 rebounds per game. She led ECU in made threes with 48, shooting 31 percent from distance.

The shooter knocked down a season-high six threes against UTSA for a career-high 22 points and was later named the American Athletic Conference's Freshman of the Week. Gordon matched the ECU record for made threes in a game by a freshman and finished just one away from the overall single-game program record.

Gordon provided nine points against No. 1 South Carolina and added 16 points three separate times against Charleston Southern, Tulsa and Wichita State. She would ultimately score double figures in six games throughout the season for the Pirates.

She helped lead East Carolina to a 19-14 season and an AAC Tournament Championship appearance by taking down the No. 1 overall seed Tulsa in the second round.

The five-foot-nine native of Hallandale Beach, Florida, won five high school state championships in the Sunshine State.
