Eagles pound out series win over Dolphins

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University ripped 11 extra-base hits, including four round-trippers, as the Eagles defeated Jacksonville University 12-3 Saturday night to clinch an Atlantic Sun Conference baseball series at Swanson Stadium.

The Eagles (22-22, 14-9 ASUN) saw Charles Davalan lead off the home half of the first with a solo homer over the wall in right to knot the score, 1-1. Three more runs crossed the plate in the third as Ian Farrow lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate a run and Evan Dempsey drilled a two-run homer to right to make it 4-1 for the home side.

An unearned run would score in the fifth as Robert Moya took advantage of a Jacksonville error in the previous at-bat, plating Harrison Povey with an RBI double. In the sixth, after Trevor Kole connected for a leadoff double off the wall in left, Davalan's bouncer up the middle would turn into a hustle double, plating Kole to make it 6-1.

Jacksonville (22-22, 15-8) got two runs back in the seventh, but the Eagles would answer back immediately. Robert Moya would turn on the first pitch he saw for a two-run blast, his ninth homer of the season, to make it 8-3. Later in the inning, with Javier Gorostola and Davalan on base, Mac Moise would foul off a pair of 1-2 pitches before unloading on an offering, sending it over the wall in left to make it 11-3. Gorostola would cap the scoring an inning later with a sacrifice fly as the Eagles earned the win by nine.

In his first ASUN start of the season, Cameron Bye was solid, allowing just three earned runs on eight hits over six innings. Derek Crum would retire the side in the seventh, with Lucas Hartman working a perfect eighth and ninth to seal the deal.

FGCU will look to sweep the series tomorrow at Swanson Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
