DELAND, Fla. - After two days off - one planned, one not so much - Florida Gulf Coast University will return to the diamond at Melching Park Saturday at 3 p.m. as the Eagles face host Stetson University in the semifinal round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Championship.
The Eagles advanced to the semis as one of three teams qualifying out of Pool A in the championship. Kennesaw State University and the Hatters were the other two squads to advance out of Pool A. Either Jacksonville University or the University of Central Arkansas will advance as the winner of Pool B, with that game being played tonight.
After Stetson's 5-3 win over Austin Peay State University Wednesday, there was no need for additional Pool A games to be played to determine which teams would advance to the championship bracket. Today's play in DeLand was supposed to feature KSU against APSU and FGCU taking on Stetson. Instead, the last Pool A games were scrapped, adding a second consecutive off day to the schedule for both the Eagles and Kennesaw State.
FGCU advanced out of Pool A following a 13-3 (7) win over the Governors Tuesday. On a day that a stiff wind was blowing out to right, the Eagles held the highest scoring team in the NCAA during the regular season to a paltry three runs.
Mac Moise,
Robert Moya, and
Evan Dempsey each had three RBI in the win, with
Justin Henschel going all seven innings to earn the victory on the bump.
Kennesaw State earned a 6-5 win over Stetson and a 4-3 win over the Eagles to be 2-0 in Pool A. FGCU and Stetson each finished 1-1.
The Green and Blue went 2-1 against Stetson in an ASUN series Apr. 12-14 at Melching Park. In the Friday opener of the series, FGCU scored five runs in the second thanks in large part to two-run homers by Moise and
Charles Davalan. The Eagles would ride seven shutout innings from
Davian Garcia and FGCU would win 6-0. After a 12-2 loss the next day, the Eagles bounced back to win 8-3 in the finale to take the series. Moise scored four runs in the victory, joining
Jacob Lojewski as the only Eagles with two RBI in the game.
If the Eagles win, they will play in the final game of the ASUN Championship Sunday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal game.
