Eagles fly into final weekend of the season

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University softball concludes the regular season slate on Friday and Saturday against Kennesaw State University with a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday.

FGCU is currently in second place in the ASUN at 15-6, which earns a two-round bye. The Eagles can finish anywhere from first to sixth in the conference depending on this weekend's results. The first and second seeds get a two-round bye, the third and fourth seeds get a one-round bye, while the fifth and sixth seeds start the tournament in the opening round single elimination game. KSU is currently in ninth place, just outside the ASUN playoff picture by way of not owning the tiebreaker against Austin Peay.

Tiebreakers for the ASUN tournament are first head-to-head and second RPI.

CLINCHING SCENARIOS

1 Seed (Two-round bye, in double elimination)
  • FGCU earns the one seed if they sweep KSU, EKU gets swept by Lipscomb and RPI ranking favors FGCU
  • UNF could also tie for the one seed. In the event of a three-way tie, teams will be ordered on RPI
  • RPI ranks heading into the weekend: EKU 54, FGCU 64, UNF 72
2 Seed (Two-round bye, in double elimination)
  • FGCU controls their destiny for this seed, if the Eagles sweep the Owls, the two seed stays in Fort Myers
  • FGCU is the highest rated in RPI over every team currently ranked two through six in the ASUN and the Eagles own the head-to-head against every team except for Central Arkansas who they have not played
  • RPI ranks heading into the weekend: FGCU 64, UNF 72, Central Arkansas 97, North Alabama 98, Jacksonville 152
3 Seed (One-round bye, in double elimination)
  • FGCU would have to have a worse weekend result than UNF for the Ospreys to go ahead of the Eagles
  • FGCU would likely own any tiebreaker over the remaining three teams fighting for this spot (UNA, UCA, JU)
  • UNA and UCA are one game behind FGCU, JU is two games behind FGCU
4 Seed (One-round bye, in double elimination)
  • FGCU would likely have a 1-2 weekend against KSU in this scenario
  • UNA or UCA would have to sweep their series
  • UNF would have to have a better weekend than the Eagles
5 seed (No byes, in single elimination first round)
  • FGCU could have either a 1-2 weekend or a 0-3 weekend for this scenario to happen
  • Two teams of UNA or UCA earning two games on the Eagles or JU earning three games on the Eagles would happen
  • UNF would have to have a better weekend than the Eagles
6 seed (No byes, in single elimination first round)
  • FGCU would get swept by KSU in this scenario
  • All three teams of UNA or UCA earning two games on the Eagles or JU earning three games on the Eagles would happen
  • UNF would have to have a better weekend than the Eagles
The Eagles are five games clear of the seventh seed with three games left, earning that seed is impossible.
