Florida Gulf Coast University softball took the first of two games in Clarksville, Tenn. against Austin Peay State University on Saturday, 8-3, before dropping the second game, 9-2.
Riley Oakes accounted for four runs (two runs scored, two RBI) in the first game and five Eagles recorded multi-hit games in the second game.
FGCU 8, APSU 3
FGCU jumped out to an early lead with an RBI single in the first from
Neely Peterson. A two-run third inning with RBI from
Nikki Gibson and
Tiffany Meek allowed the Eagles to have a quick three-run lead.
The Governors would score in the bottom of the third but Oakes came back and answered with an RBI double to bring
Avery Viancos and
Meagan Ricks home. Oakes would steal third in the next at bat and a throw into the outfield allowed her to score on the play and give FGCU the 6-1 lead.
Olivia Black would round out the scoring for the Eagles with a triple that would one-hop the wall and bring Meek across the plate. Black came home to score on a single by
Caridad Estes.
FGCU 2, APSU 9
The second game saw the breaks go the way of the Governors. In the first inning, Austin Peay scored two runs after the third out was called when the umpires decided to overrule an out call on a rundown. In the fourth inning, the Governors scored four unearned runs off two Eagles errors. In total, four unearned runs were scored and two runs were scored after the third out of an inning was called on the field.
FGCU offense was strong in the game, recording 12 hits and five Eagles recorded multi-hit games. The first inning started with four consecutive hits for the Green and Blue.Â
Avery Viancos reached first with a single before getting thrown out trying to steal second. Oakes singled but was thrown out going first to third.
Neely Peterson singled but was thrown out after Gibson recorded the fourth hit of the inning.
Sophie Wylie and
Tiffany Meek recorded RBIs in the game for the Green and Blue.
Up next for the Eagles is the series finale against the Governors.
