FGCU travels to Lipscomb for ASUN series

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After dropping three contests in a row, Florida Gulf Coast University will look to right the ship this weekend in Nashville, Tenn., as the Eagles take on Lipscomb University for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference baseball series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. EDT Friday.

The Eagles (19-20, 11-7 ASUN) dropped the final two games of a three-game set to Austin Peay last weekend before falling Tuesday night at UCF. While the Eagles had 29 hits in those three games, 22 of those were singles. Ian Farrow had three extra-base hits thanks to a double against UCF and two solo homers in the finale with APSU.

FGCU now sits one game out of a three-way tie for first in the conference standings after entering last weekend in a four-way tie for the top spot. Stetson, Kennesaw State, and Jacksonville each lost at least one game last weekend to keep the Eagles within striking distance of the top. More importantly, the Eagles are still third in RPI among conference teams. KSU leads the way at No. 60, with Stetson at No. 139 and FGCU at 141. Jacksonville is at No. 183 with Austin Peay lurking in fifth at No. 187. The regular season champion and the top three remaining teams in RPI will be placed in Pool A for the ASUN Championship, with the next four schools making up Pool B. Three schools will advance out of Pool A into the championship bracket, with only one school making it out of Pool B.

The Eagles will be looking for a measure of revenge against the Bisons this weekend. It was Lipscomb which defeated the Eagles last year in the championship game of the ASUN Tournament 12-6, denying the most potent offense in FGCU history a chance at reaching the NCAA Tournament. This year, the Bisons (13-26, 9-9 ASUN) have struggled in out of conference matches but have a .500 record in conference play and are just two games behind FGCU in the conference standings.

The contest will feature two of the most-tenured coaches in the ASUN with over 45 years of experience and 1,400 wins between them. FGCU's Dave Tollett is in his 22nd season and enters with a career record of 732-446-3. Jeff Forehand of Lipscomb is in his 24th season overall and 18th with the Bisons. He has a career record of 682-637-1, with a mark at Lipscomb of 471-495.

The Eagles and Bisons haven't played in Nashville against each other since the 2018 series. This season, the first and final game of the series will be available for streaming via ESPN+.
