Women’s tennis season ends in ASUN Championship final

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sixth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship final to top-seed Stetson University Sunday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

Jordana Ossa was named to the All-ASUN Tournament Team.

The Green & Blue (14-10) made it to the final by defeating No. 3-seed University of North Florida Friday and No. 2-seeded Lipscomb University Saturday. 

"First of all, congratulations to Stetson for playing a better match today, the ladies competed hard," said FGCU head women's tennis coach Courtney Vernon. "I want to say a special thank you to our   seniors and everything that they gave for this program also a special thank you to the community for supporting us, we are looking forward to next year."
 
The Hatters started the day with doubles wins on court No. 3 and No. 2.

Stetson stretched its lead to two as Paloma Goldsmith fell 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 3. Amelia Kopel got the Eagles on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 6-0 victory on court No. 6.

The Hatters earned a 3-1 advantage as Ida Ferding dropped her match 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 5.

Stetson just needed one more point to clinch the match, but FGCU kept fighting on as Ossa dropped her first set 4-6 but won the second, 6-1 and was tied up 2-2 on court No. 4. Fanny Norin was also rallying through sets posting 2-6, 6-3, 1-3 scores at the time.

The Eagles ran out of time as Isabella Colmenares fought through three sets before ultimately falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on court No. 2 and Stetson clinched the ASUN Championship match.
