FORT MYERS, Fla. – The sixth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University women's tennis team advanced to the
Atlantic Sun Conference Championship semifinals by defeating third-seeded and 2023 ASUN Champion University of North Florida 4-0 Friday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
It was the first time the Eagles completed a season sweep against the Ospreys (12-10) and the first time in 23 matches the Green & Blue kept UNF off the scoreboard.
FGCU will now face No. 2 seed Lipscomb University (15-5, 7-3 ASUN) at 9 a.m. Saturday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
"The ladies competed hard today, they love playing at home and they showed a lot of fight and energy today." said FGCU head women's tennis coach
Courtney Vernon. "They are looking forward to playing again tomorrow."
FGCU (13-9) picked up the doubles point without having to finish the third match.
Isabella Colmenares and
Paloma Goldsmith teamed to win 6-1 on court No. 2.
Jordana Ossa and
Lola Glantz clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.
In singles, FGCU got straight to work as
Amelia Kopel cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court No. 6 before
Fanny Norin won 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 1.
The Ospreys got no chance to respond as Ossa clinched the match winning 6-2, 6-3 to send the Eagles to the next round.
