FORT MYERS, Fla. - A day after scoring 19 runs, Florida Gulf Coast University could only put three on the board Saturday as the the Eagles fell 8-3 to Fairfield University at Swanson Stadium.
Trailing 4-0, the Eagles got on the board in the sixth. With
Charles Davalan on first,
Jacob Lojewski pulled a double down the line in left to bring the freshman around the bases, cutting the lead to three.
Fairfield (2-11) would put a pair on the board in the seventh, but
Armani Newton's biggest swing of the game kept the Eagles in the contest. His 409-foot blast over the wall in center was good for a two-run homer, trimming the Stags lead down to three again, 6-3. That would be as close as FGCU would come as an eighth inning two-run homer gave the guests an 8-3 advantage for the rest of the game.
Anthony Ursitti (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in 2.2 innings.
Justin Henschel pitched well in the early stages of his 5.1 innings of relief, but Fairfield would score four earned runs against the hurler.
Cameron Bye worked a perfect ninth with a strikeout to his credit.
Lojewski's two hit day was the only multi-hit performance of the afternoon for FGCU. The Eagles finished the contest with just six hits and three walks.
The two teams will be back in action Sunday at noon to wrap up the series.
