Eagles to square off with UNCW Wednesday

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After a break for final exams, Florida Gulf Coast University's men's basketball team will be back on the hardwood Wednesday night in Wimington, North Carolina as the Eagles take on UNC Wilmington. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on FloSports.

FGCU has been idle since Dec. 8 when it took on LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In that contest, while LSU by double-digits for most of the game, a late run spurred by three 3-pointers from Darren Williams made it an 80-71 contest at the final buzzer. Keeshawn Kellman had a double-double in his return to the lineup with 11 points and 10 boards, with Rahmir Barno scoring a season-high 15.

FGCU has had a tough schedule to start the year, with the NCAA's NET rankings proving it. The Eagles have played five teams in the NCAA NET top 85 so far, posting a 1-4 record. The Eagles gave Drake (No. 46) its biggest scare of the season, falling at the buzzer 63-61. FGCU played tight against St. Bonaventure (No. 55) for most of the contest before falling. In the Wednesday leading up to the LSU (No. 63) game, the Eagles led Furman (No. 82) for over 30 minutes but dropped a 76-73 decision. FGCU's win against the top 85 came against FAU (No. 84) when Jevin Muniz hit a shot at the buzzer to give FGCU an 80-78 win.

The Eagles (3-7) will take on the Seahawks (7-3) in a rematch from last season's contest in Alico Arena. In that game, FGCU got off to a slow start offensively as UNCW rolled to a 71-55 victory.

This season's match-up takes place later in the season. This will be the 11th game for each of the two teams this year. Last year, it was FGCU's seventh game and UNCW's sixth.

UNCW is coming off an 88-83 loss to Howard on the road last weekend. Khamari McGriff scored a career-high 34 points for the Seahawks in the loss. UNCW is the second opponent for the Eagles that has played No. 1-ranked Kansas this season, with Furman being the first. The Seahawks dropped an 88-64 contest against the Jayhawks Nov. 19.

Following Wednesday's game, the Eagles will be back home to take on Florida Tech in the final game in Alico Arena for the 2024 calendar year. Tipoff Sunday will be at 1 p.m. with tickets available at FGCUTickets.com.
