FORT MYERS, Fla. - Needing a win and help elsewhere to secure an Atlantic Sun Conference co-regular season championship on Saturday, Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer (4-9-2, 3-3-1) fell to Queens University of Charlotte (5-9-3, 2-2-2), 1-0.
"I think if we get a little bit more courage, decisiveness and ambition, we win the game and the league," head coach
Jesse Cormier said. "When you don't have certain qualities in key moments when the game is decided, you don't get the result."
Coming into Saturday, with a win against Queens, the Eagles would need a loss from UNF and a draw or loss from Stetson to secure a share of the regular season ASUN title. The Ospreys would fall 6-2 against Central Arkansas and Stetson would draw Bellarmine 1-1, but FGCU could not find the breakthrough despite out-shooting the Royals 11-6.
The Eagles kept pressure up through much of the game but a goal in the 34th minute propelled Queens to the victory. The Green and Blue won the possession battle 59-41 looking for the decisive strike.
The match marks the most fouls called in a game this season with 40, 21 on FGCU and 19 on Queens, surpassing the 39 called in the Jacksonville match (27 for FGCU, 12 for JU).
After tonight's results, FGCU is the third seed for the ASUN tournament and will travel to Jacksonville to play in the quarterfinals hosted by UNF on Nov 9. The first match will be against the sixth-seeded Bellarmine. The two teams faced each other four days ago on Oct. 29 in Lousiville, a match Bellarmine won 2-0. If the Eagles win against Bellarmine, they will have to turn around to face the hosts two days later on Nov. 11.
