Eagles open Alico Wednesday against St. Bonaventure

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After a pair of road games to start the season, Florida Gulf Coast University men's basketball opens up Alico Arena for the new season against St. Bonaventure from the A-10 Conference. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Eagles (0-2) were competitive in each of their first two games before ultimately coming up short in the end. In last Friday's game at TCU, the Eagles trailed by nine early but rallied back to take a 29-24 lead in the first half. The Eagles would trail 30-29 at halftime and 47-46 with just over 7:00 to go, but TCU would go on a 20-5 run to close the game, 67-51. Keeshawn Kellman finished with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds.

In the season opener at UNC Greensboro, the Spartans connected on 10 3-pointers in the first half to put FGCU in a 44-30 hole at halftime. The Eagles would rally back in the second half to tie the game at 58-all and 59-all after clamping down on defense and only allowing two 3-pointers in the half. However, the hosts would go on a late 11-0 run to pull away and earn the victory 73-64. Dallion Johnson joined Kellman with a team-best 15 points.

"I like starting out with a tough non-conference because it shows you your weaknesses," said FGCU head coach Pat Chambers. "[It shows] what's glaring and what we need to work on."

Kellman has started out shooting like he did a season ago. The sixth-year player is 15-of-19 from the field so far this year, including his first career 3-pointer. After connecting on 68.18 percent of his shots last season to finish second in the nation in field goal percentage, the Allentown, Pennsylvania native currently sits at 78.95 percent.

That tough string of games to start the season continues with St. Bonaventure (2-0). The Bonnies started their campaign with a 70-56 win over CSUN Nov. 4, followed by an 87-78 victory over Canisius in Buffalo Saturday. Chance Moore leads the way for St. Bonaventure with 22.5 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest. The Bonnies are coming off a 20-13 campaign a season ago.
