FORT MYERS, Fla. - Six goals each coming from a different player carried Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer to a 6-1 win over Keiser on Wednesday.
Cao Chaves and
Lucas Sperner led the team with three points off one goal and one assist on the night.
"I love scoring at home. I love the guys taking their chances, taking risks," head coach
Jesse Cormier said. "Overall it's a good night for us and it is something we can build on going into UNF."
Leo Schorr got the goal scoring started for the Eagles with Sperner,
Alon Drey, Chaves,
Brooks Beeman and
Stanley Bazelais joining in later in the game.
Schorr's goal came in the 18th minute when Chaves battled through defenders putting the cutback right to the feet of Schorr who put the ball to the roof of the goal, giving the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
The Green and Blue kept the pressure on the Seahawks for the remainder of the half finally breaking through in the 41st minute.
Samuel Maraver took the ball for a throw-in putting the ball into play to Sperner who was blocking his man. Sperner turned, and from just outside the 18 put the ball over the top of the goalkeeper for a world-class finish.
The Eagles went into the half up 2-0. The Seahawks answered in the 48th minute off a corner kick that was able to find a foot at the back post that redirected that ball into the net.
With the score at 2-1, FGCU put the game away with four goals over 22 minutes and 22 seconds. Drey started the four-goal onslaught in the 63rd minute with a run behind the play. Sperner got into the 18, played the ball slightly behind himself through to the streaking Drey who put a low-driven ball past the keeper. Maraver earned his second assist just one minute and 34 seconds later when he put a cross into the box that found the shoulder of Chaves at the right angle to redirect into the goal.
FGCU begin playing more freely in the attack with the three-goal cushion. Beeman added to the score with a ball from outside the 18, across the box and into the back of the net. Bazelais completed the scoring on the day when he nutmegged the Keiser defender to go one-on-one with the keeper, putting the ball towards the top of the net for the sixth and final goal of the day.
