FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast
University men's soccer team (0-2-2) dropped a 2-1 decision against Marist College (2-1-1) Monday at Pickering Field.
Junior
Shoki Yoshida delivered the first goal of the match as he fired a shot off his left foot that stunned the Red Foxes' goalkeeper, Luca Bulfon to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
"We had the strategy in the first half, played with intelligence, crisp passing, had Marist chasing the game," head coach
Jesse Cormier said. "The problem is we didn't sustain it and made some poor decisions, lacked the discipline, and lost our way, especially after missing our opportunities to score and put the game away. The Marist team deserves the credit. They never gave up and found the moments when the game was decided. We can't feel sorry for ourselves, have to find solutions and learn from our mistakes."
Overall, FGCU had 17 shots with nine on goal while Marist had 10 with four on target. The game saw a total of six yellow cards issued throughout the night with FGCU picking up four and junior Lucas
Windschauer being issued a red card and ejected from the game at 74:50.
FGCU's goalkeeper
Wyatt Kistner made two saves and conceded two goals for the evening.
Yoshida first attempted to put the Eagles on the scoreboard at 13:05 but his shot landed just left from the goal. His reward would be granted 15 minutes later as he found the back of the net at 25:08 to give the Eagles an advantage.
The Green & Blue fired off six shots in the final 15 minutes of the half, with two each from junior
Niall Reid-Stephen and sophomore
Shachar Nissim but none would connect and the Eagles went into the half with the one-goal lead.
In the second half, the Eagles released five shots compared to the Red Foxes three but Marist capitalized on their opportunities and Jonathan Salguero scored and tied the match 1-1 at 67:03.
A few minutes later Windschauer's ejection awarded the Red Foxes a free kick and Jared Juleau sent a flaming ball passed Kistner for Marist to take the lead, 2-1.
Luke Peperak had the final chance for the Eagles at 88:13 to even the game but his shot was saved by Bulfon and Marist sealed the 2-1 victory.
FGCU returns to the field on Saturday, Sep. 9 to host the University of Alabama-Birmingham (0-2-2) at 7 p.m.
