Eagles deliver 2-1 victory over UAB

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team (1-2-2) produced a goal in both the first and second half to defeat American Athletic Conference member University of Alabama-Birmingham (0-3-2) Saturday at Pickering Field for its first win of the season.

Junior Landon Ameres delivered the first goal of the match with a header from a Jaffer Murphy cross within the first six minutes of the game. In the second half, Luis Lugo secured the game-winning goal as he took a pass from sophomore Pau Santanach and buried the ball in the top left corner of the net.
"It's a good gritty win. UAB came here to get the three points and our guys showed excellent determination to find our way in the end," head coach Jesse Cormier said. "It's been a challenging couple of weeks, but we learned much about ourselves and should be ready for the tough conference games ahead. We are proud and will enjoy the moment, then get back into training next week to prepare for our trip to Jacksonville."

Overall, FGCU registered a season-best 19 shots with eight on goal, while Alabama-Birmingham had 11 shots with four on target. Junior Wyatt Kistner allowed one goal while making three saves between the pipes.
In the first half, neither team had registered a shot before Ameres scored at 5:27 to give the Green & Blue a 1-0 lead. From there, the Eagles would fire off 11 shots, with three coming from Santanach to the Blazers' five, but neither team found the back of the net. The Eagles entered the locker room at the half with their one-goal advantage.

In the second half, Ameres produced a shot at 47:27, but it was saved by UAB's goalkeeper Jack Hudson. In the 59th minute, the Blazers capitalized and scored to even the match 1-1 off a penalty kick.
With tensions high on both sides, UAB and FGCU kept searching for another goal as the Eagles took four shots and the Blazers registered one. Lugo scored his first collegiate goal of his career to put the Eagles in front at the 78:31 mark.

Lugo had the game's final shot at 85:17 as the Eagles wrapped up its 2-1 victory against UAB.

FGCU will enter ASUN play next as they head to Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday to take on Jacksonville University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Southern Oak Stadium.
