Eagles pick up first ASUN sweep

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A balanced attack helped Florida Gulf Coast University pick up a, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-17), sweep of Queens University of Charlotte Friday night in Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball action.

The Eagles (10-5, 3-0 ASUN) hit .429 as a team for the match. Skylar English and Shelby Kent each had seven kills to lead the FGCU attack, with Lily Tessier dishing out a match-high 33 assists in the win.

"Nice all around effort to kick off this road trip," said FGCU head coach Matt Botsford. "It was great to see the production and efficiency from all of our middles tonight, all of which were able to contribute. Skylar was also outstanding and played with a nice rhythm throughout."

FGCU was tied at 7-all with Queens (3-11, 0-2 ASUN) in the first set, but after an Ella Chapman kill broke the tie, the guests would never be tied again in the set. The reigning ASUN Freshman of the Week had four kills in the set for the Eagles, including the last two, as FGCU took the opener 25-13.

The second set would see FGCU use score eight of the last 10 points to earn the win in the frame, 25-17. The third set would see the Green & Blue use a 5-0 run to go ahead 17-10 as the Eagles set sail to the sweep.

Chapman, Iyanna Battle, Oreva Evivie, Destiny Nelson, and Juliana Lentz combined for 17 kills out of the middle without an error, hitting .680 as a unit. Reese Burry had a match-high 14 digs out of the libero spot for FGCU.

The Eagles will be back in action Sunday at Kennesaw State University. First serve in Kennesaw, Georgia is set for 1 p.m.
