KENNESAW, Ga. -
Alexandra Zakutney had a season-high 24 kills to help send Florida Gulf Coast University to a 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10) win over Kennesaw State University in Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball action at the KSU Convocation Center Sunday afternoon.
The win keeps FGCU (11-5, 4-0 ASUN) undefeated in conference play in the early stages of the season. Three of the four ASUN wins for the Eagles have come in five-set matches.
"That was a nice, steady performance and an important result as we wrap up this road trip," said FGCU head coach
Matt Botsford. "Huge match for Alex, who was outstanding all afternoon and continues to get better match after match."
Lily Tessier had 39 assists and a season-high 16 digs in guiding the FGCU offense.
Reese Burry had 18 digs, with
Claire Ertel adding 14 along the Green & Blue's back line.
I thought Lily did a great job with her defensive distribution and our defensive core of Reese, Claire, and
Nylah Raspberry made a big impact out there," Coach Botsford said.
Perhaps no point in the match typified the contest quite like the early stages of the second set. Already ahead in the best-of-five 1-0, KSU raced out to a 10-1 lead. Undaunted, the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to cut the KSU lead down to four, 10-6. A kill by the Owls (8-6, 1-2 ASUN) slowed the run briefly, but back-to-back kills by Zakutney reignited the flame. Eventually, a service ace by Tessier and a KSU attack error tied the set, 15-all.
KSU would regain the lead in the set, holding a 22-19 lead in the frame with serve in hand. Instead, a kill by
Ella Chapman and back-to-back attacks from Zakutney tied the set at 22-all. After an attack error gave FGCU its first lead of the set, a block by Chapman and
Shelby Kent set up the Eagles with set point. Kent would close out the set with a smooth kill past a rattled KSU team, giving the guests a tie in the best-of-five.
The Eagles will return to Alico Arena this weekend in Fort Myers, Fla., to host Stetson University and the University of Central Arkansas in ASUN action. Friday's match with the Hatters is set for 7 p.m.
