Eagles deliver 4-0 shutout victory against Stetson

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team delivered an offensive barrage to defeat Stetson University Saturday at Pickering Field for its first ASUN win of the season.

This is the Hatters' first defeat in their last four matchups, and they now sit in fourth place in the league while the Eagles are currently in second behind Lipscomb, which is 2-0 in ASUN play.

Jonathan Bryant produced the match's first goal with a header from a Niall Reid-Stephen's corner kick in the 17th minute. Pau Santanach continued the offensive energy and buried a penalty kick in the bottom right side of the net in the first half.

Alejandro Rodriguez put the game out of reach in the second half as he took a pass from Gustavo Ferrari and shot the ball past Stetson's goalkeeper, Nicolo Radaelli, to give the Green & Blue a 3-0 lead. Job Choute scored the final goal of the game and his first collegiate goal in the 79th minute.

"The guys played their most complete game tonight in the biggest game of the season to date," said FGCU Head Men's Soccer Coach Jesse Cormier. "It was good on both sides; we took our chances and defended with vigor and passion."

Overall, FGCU (2-2-3, 1-0-1 ASUN) registered a season-best 20 shots with nine on goal, while Stetson had 13 shots with four on target. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Copeland made an impressive debut for the Eagles, earning the shutout victory and making four saves.

In the first 15 minutes, the Eagles registered five shots to the Hatters three before Bryant scored at 17:55 to give the Green & Blue a 1-0 lead.

Eight minutes later, Pau Santanach seized an opportunity and delivered on a penalty kick at 26:28. Stetson (4-3-2, 1-1-0 ASUN) responded with a shot, but it would not connect, and the Eagles entered the locker room at the half with a two-goal advantage.

In the second half, FGCU kept searching for another goal, firing off four shots before Rodriguez sent a low shot in the left side of the net at 65:02.

Just when the Hatters thought the nightmare at Pickering was over, Choute etched his name on the scoresheet as he sent a blazing shot past the keeper to give the Eagles a 4-0 advantage in the 79th minute.

"Our attack wide with Job, Ni'all with Pau and Ferrari providing the tip of the spear for us tonight were great. [We had] great goals and execution with our final action. We will enjoy the night and start to prepare for UNF next week," Coach Cormier said.

FGCU will continue ASUN action as they head to Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday to take on North Florida (2-3-4, 0-1-1 ASUN). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
