Eagles deliver 2-1 victory at North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team (3-2-3, 2-0-1 ASUN) pushed its unbeaten streak to four after defeating the University of North Florida (2-4-4, 0-2-1 ASUN) Saturday at Hodges Stadium. The Eagles are currently second in league action and join first-place Lipscomb as the only teams with no conference defeats.

Shoki Yoshida delivered the first goal of the match off a Niall Reid-Stephen's cross in the 25th minute. In the second half, Gustavo Ferrari scored his first goal of the season with a successful penalty kick.

"The game tonight was another classic battle with UNF," head coach Jesse Cormier said. "They're a good team with plenty of fight, but our guys were resolute and battled to the end to get the win. It was great to see everyone fight for each other. We will learn plenty from this and use it to prepare for Bellarmine next Saturday."

The teams were close in shots as the Ospreys registered nine with four on goal, and the Eagles had eight with four on target. Daniel Copeland, this week's ASUN Goalkeeper of the Week, allowed one goal while making three saves between the pipes.

In the first half, both programs registered two shots before Yoshida stunned UNF's goalkeeper Chema Preciado with a powerful shot that hit the top post before finding the back of the net at 25:21 to give the Green & Blue a 1-0 lead.

From there, defense increased on both sides, with the Eagles only firing two shots compared to the Ospreys one, but neither team found the back of the net. The Eagles entered the locker room at the half with the one-goal advantage.

In the second half, neither team registered a shot before Ferrari capitalized on a penalty kick to increase the Green and Blue's lead to 2-0 at 48:36. North Florida responded in the 65th minute and closed the gap to 2-1.

UNF and FGCU kept searching for another goal as the Ospreys registered three shots and the Eagles registered two, but as time elapsed the Eagles' pair of goals would be enough to leave Jacksonville with three points.

FGCU will return home to host Bellarmine University (2-2-5, 1-1-1) on Saturday at Pickering Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and it will be Pink OUT for Beat Cancer Night.
