JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team (1-2-3, 0-0-1 ASUN) opened ASUN play Saturday with a 2-2 tie against Jacksonville University (2-4-1, 0-0-1) at Southern Oak Stadium.
Freshman
Luis Lugo scored both goals for the Eagles in the 32
nd and 55th minute. He now leads the Green & Blue in goals this season with three.
"Thought we had some dominant stretches of play, and scored two really good goals. The attack and creation is coming, and we're building a collective attack," head coach
Jesse Cormier said "I thought we had some great chances to add a third and left the door open for them to get back in it. Unfortunately, defensively we conceded on a set play, and conceded a penalty late to not take all the three points, but will look to improve in key areas for Stetson at home next Saturday."
Overall, FGCU outshot the Dolphins, 16-11 while having seven shots on goal to their four. Junior goalkeeper
Wyatt Kistner made two saves, and FGCU picked up eight yellow cards.
In the first half, sophomore
Alon Drey fired the first shot of the match at 5:52 which landed on the top of the goal. The Eagles took three more shots before Lugo took a pass from freshman
Job Choute and fired the ball past Jacksonville's goalkeeper, Christian Sekanina, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 32:59.
The Dolphins responded one minute later as Mason Duval evened the match 1-1 with less than 10 minutes left in the first half. The Eagles had two more shots on goal but none would connect, and the score remained tied at the half.
The Green & Blue started the second half with a bang, firing off five shots within the first 10 minutes before finding the back of the net at 55:43. Lugo took a feed from sophomore
Pau Santanach and buried it to the left corner of the net to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles kept applying pressure in search of another goal but ended up in troubled waters as the Dolphins capitalized in the 77th minute to even the match 2-2 off a penalty kick.
FGCU had its final shot in the game from junior
Shoki Yoshida but it landed just wide at 82:11. JU's Mason Duval took the final shot of the game with nine seconds left, but both teams walked away with one point.
The Eagles will return home on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. as they host Stetson University (3-2-2, 1-0-0 ASUN).
