Errors plague Eagles in 3-0 loss at Rice

HOUSTON – Errors plagued Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball Saturday in its 3-0 loss against Rice.

FGCU (4-4) eyed to clean up its offensive attack after battling Texas, the defending national champions, Friday. The Eagles were credited with 24 errors, one more than Friday night.

Saturday's defeat marked the first time this season that FGCU has suffered back-to-back losses.

Early indications of the match were positive. FGCU secured a 6-4 advantage in the opening set as Claire Ertel fired consecutive aces.

However, head coach Matt Botsford was forced to call an early timeout as Rice University (4-3) rallied to take an 11-8 lead. FGCU regrouped and managed to tie set one at 15 all, but the Owls would march on to a 25-17 victory.

Rice then took the second set, easily winning 25-12.

In the third, the Eagles started to click in spurts. FGCU grabbed a 22-18 advantage late, hoping to extend the match. A Skylar English kill even provided a set-point opportunity for the Eagles, but FGCU fell in three as Rice outlasted the Green & Blue 26-24 to complete the sweep.

Alexandra Zakutney led all Eagles in kills with a season-high 11.

Lily Tessier produced her third double-double of the year, tallying 22 assists and 11 digs. Destiny Nelson provided a late spark with her team-leading three blocks. Reese Burry added 16 digs on the defensive side of the ball.

FGCU closes the Rice Invitational Sunday with a neutral site battle against Houston Christian. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET).
