Eagles wrap up Rice Invitational with 3-1 win over Houston Christian

HOUSTON – Florida Gulf Coast University volleyball wrapped up the Rice Invitational Sunday with a 3-1 win over Houston Christian.

"Nice way to end the weekend, and I'm very happy to see the consistency we played with from set two through four," head coach Matt Bostford said. "I thought Lily did a great job with the offensive distribution, and our first touch allowed us to find some good matchups along the net. Juliana and Oreva helped turn things around for us with their presence at the net, and the team blocking started to really come alive as the match went on."

The Eagles (5-4) rattled off three consecutive set victories after dropping the opening frame. Houston Christian (4-5) grabbed a one-set advantage, winning 25-19. FGCU never led in the opening set.

The Eagles soon caught fire by asserting its dominance at the service line and at the net as FGCU posted 11 blocks and 11 aces for the match. Six different Eagles recorded at least one ace.

Oreva Evivie paced the Eagles in blocks with a career-high of six. Juliana Lentz provided five blocks, making up the other half of the Eagles' wall.

Offensively, FGCU orchestrated a much cleaner match than its previous two outings in Texas, hitting .255 percent on Sunday.

The Green & Blue cruised to victories in the second and the third sets, winning both by a score of 25-13. FGCU soared out to a 21-8 lead in the third.

Botsford's squad effectively tamed the Huskies and clinched the match with its 25-16 set-four win. FGCU surrendered only three lead changes after the first set.

Three Eagles reached double figures in kills Sunday. Skylar English fired a season-high 14. Shelby Kent matched English for the team lead, and Alexandra Zakutney notched 10 kills and 11 digs.

Lily Tessier produced a season-high 43 assists, including a 10-dig effort for her fourth double-double performance of the season. Reese Burry added a team-leading 18 digs.

FGCU returns to action Friday, Sept. 15, to host the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic.
