Men's soccer draws 1-1 at Northern Kentucky

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team (0-1-1) tied 1-1 against Horizon League member Northern Kentucky (0-0-2) Sunday at NKU Soccer Stadium.

"I thought we fell well short of our program expectations today to allow a team back in the game the way we did in the second half through a lack of discipline and poor execution is unacceptable in our culture," head coach Jesse Cormier said. "We all need to do a better job if we expect to have the success we planned for. This week, we will return to training and address the key issues to operate at a higher level next Friday."

Overall, FGCU had 14 shots, with five on goal, while NKU had four shots with two on goal. The game saw a total of four yellow cards issued throughout the afternoon with FGCU picking up three.

Junior goalkeeper Wyatt Kistner made one save. At the 17th-minute mark, junior forward Shoki Yoshida nearly gave the Eagles the lead with a shot, but NKU's goalkeeper Romeo Paparesta made a huge save.

Senior midfielder Alejandro Lopez responded three minutes later and sent the ball to the center of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. FGCU kept applying offensive pressure in search of another goal, rattling off five shots in the remainder of the first half but none connected.

In the 53rd minute, junior midfielder Linus Dahl sent the ball flying to the bottom right side of the net, but Northern Kentucky's Nic Lemen was there to corral it once again. One minute later junior forward Niall Reid-Stephen fired a shot in the same direction but was saved.

Defense would rule the game for the next 36 minutes before the Eagles defensive luck ran out. NKU's Joseph Roddy tied the match with 24 seconds left.

The Eagles will return to action for their home opener Friday, Sep. 1 as they host Georgia Southern. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Pickering Field.
