Women's soccer speeds past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer team notched its first win of the season Thursday, securing a 4-0 victory against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at Pickering Field.

The Eagles' (1-1-0) speed on the wings played a pivotal role in its dominance over the Islanders in the first-ever meeting. FGCU outpaced Corpus Christi (1-2-0) in total shots 30-4. Eighteen of the 30 FGCU shots were on goal.

"Wonderful result, pleased with our play and had some impressive goals," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "Felt the ladies set the tone and got better as the game went on."

In the 17th minute, sophomore Kendal Gargiula lit up the scoreboard with the first Eagles goal of the night. Gargiula found the back of the net by redirecting a loose ball in the box.

FGCU held a 1-0 lead through the first 45 minutes of play.

Ten minutes after the break, sophomore Erika Zschuppe charged a rebounded penalty shot taken by junior Ashley Labbe, giving FGCU a 2-0 advantage.

Four minutes later, junior Courtney Corcoran switched fields and found Labbe practically unguarded. Labbe sent a sneaking strike just under the crossbar to put the match out of reach.

Freshman Maya Henley Buisan added the fourth Eagles goal in the 82nd minute off a corner opportunity, her first goal of her collegiate career. The Eagles forced 10 corners Thursday.

Labbe led all Eagles in shots with six. Graduate student Grace Paradis, junior Katelyn Kauffman and Busian each recorded four shots.

Freshman Olivia Molina produced a clean sheet in goal with two saves.

FGCU returns to the pitch Sunday as the Eagles host the University of South Florida at 1 p.m. at Pickering Field.
