FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer match against Little Rock was called a no-contest Sunday due to weather-related delays and scheduling conflicts.
"Of course, disappointed that the game got abandoned, but pleased with how we played and the improvements from Thursday," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "Some great goals and stuff we can build from."
Mother Nature visited Pickering Field minutes into the match, forcing a 30-minute lightning delay. The play did resume in the first half.
Graduate student Grace Paradis produced the first of three would-be FGCU (0-1-0) goals Sunday. Paradis chipped a one-on-one ball, assisted by sophomore Erika Zschuppe, over the Little Rock goalkeeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Little Rock (0-0-1) tied the game 1-1 in the 36th minute. One minute later, the Eagles responded as junior Katharina Oelschlaeger snuck one past the Trojans' keeper. FGCU would take a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
The Eagles kept the offensive pressure brewing on a wet pitch. In the 47th minute, the Green & Blue extended its advantage 3-1 courtesy of a strike from junior Ashley Labbe.
More weather in the area forced another lengthy delay, finally prompting a no-contest decision. The match does not affect either team's record, and all stats will not be counted.
FGCU won the shot battle 9-6, firing five shots on goal. Freshman Olivia Molina was credited with four saves between the pipes.
The Eagles return to action Thursday, Aug. 24, as FGCU hosts Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Pickering Field.
The match will be streamed on ESPN+. For tickets, visit the FGCU Ticket Office
