Ellis, Figueredo Earn ASUN Baseball All-Academic Honors

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team landed two players Monday on the ASUN All-Academic Team, as senior outfielder Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) and senior infielder Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) earned spots on the 13-player list.

The honor is Ellis' second All-Academic selection, and is the first for Figueredo. FGCU has now landed 11 Eagles on the conference's All-Academic team in baseball – and this season is the third that has seen multiple FGCU honorees (Kohl Gilmore and Keith Stevens in 2019, Brady Anderson and Tyler Selesky in 2016).

"Alejandro and Brian are the ultimate players you want to coach, because they strive to be the best on the field, in the classroom and the community," said FGCU head baseball coach Dave Tollett. "I have been blessed to have coached these two. They are just so well-rounded in all aspects of their lives. They are winners all the way around."

Ellis is one of the most decorated Eagles in program history. The only captain in FGCU's baseball history broke the national record earlier this season for reaching base safely in an incredible 117 straight games. A two-time All-ASUN honoree, Brian owns the school record by getting hit 59 times by pitches, and is in range of the school record for career on-base percentage.

Ellis was tabbed as an All-ASUN Preseason First Team pick this year, as well as an ASUN Preseason Player of the Year. Named FGCU's first-ever Baseball Academic All-American last year, he has also earned All-ASUN Academic Team recognition and was named a finalist for the Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award – the highest honor bestowed upon an FGCU student-athlete. Ellis also received the FGCU Athletics McAloose Spirit Award in 2022.

Ellis earned his undergraduate degree in health science, is pursuing a master's degree in health science and carries a 3.92 cumulative GPA.

Figueredo has spent his last three seasons at FGCU after transferring from Seminole State College. He was named a Third-Team All-American and made the All-ASUN First Team last season as a junior.

Figueredo was named an ASUN Preseason Player of the Year leading into the 2023 season, and has hit 35 career home runs, 37 doubles, and 147 RBIs to go with a .346 batting average. He also was named a finalist for the Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award and was chosen as a recipient of the McAloose Spirit Award.

Figueredo earned his degree in integrated studies with a minor in computer science and carried a 3.63 cumulative GPA.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 98 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 15-plus seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 11-plus seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 49 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. In 2022, the men's golf team became the first program to earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Nine FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (No. 20 in 2021-22 and No. 22 in 2022-23), baseball (No. 15 in 2023), beach volleyball (No. 20 in 2022), and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as five of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green & Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.57 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2022 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 27 consecutive semesters. The past seven semesters (Fall 2019-Fall 2022) saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher cumulative team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
