RICHMOND, Ky. – The No. 15 FGCU baseball team (26-8 overall, 10-3 ASUN Conference) absorbed its most one-sided loss of the season Friday night, as Eastern Kentucky (14-19, 5-8) earned a 17-6 victory in seven innings at Earle Combs Stadium.
The 17 runs allowed was the most by the Eagles this season, as was EKU's five home runs. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday, with the first game beginning at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
FGCU dropped into a tie for first place in the ASUN Conference standings with Lipscomb, a game ahead of Jacksonville State and Stetson.
After spotting the Colonels a 2-0 lead in the first inning, FGCU cut the deficit in half in the second when sophomore infielder
Jake Mummau (
Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS/St. Petersburg College) belted a solo homer to right – his first of the season, and FGCU's league-leading 78
th home run of 2023.
After watching Eastern Kentucky pile on three more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 5-1, FGCU appeared to take control in the fourth. The Eagles scored five runs in the inning, as sophomore outfielder
Harrison Povey (
Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) ripped an RBI double, graduate outfielder
Brian Ellis (
Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) hit a two-run single, senior infielder
Alejandro Figueredo (
Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) singled in another run, and a fielder's choice RBI finished off the rally.
But just as soon as FGCU took a 6-5 lead, it vanished into the cool Kentucky night. EKU's Will King smashed a solo homer and Jalen Jones added a two-run shot to make it 8-6 through four innings, Miguel Larreal and DJ Sullivan each bashed three-run homers for a 14-6 margin through five, and Eagles pitchers walked home the Colonels' final three runs in the sixth to end it – the first time FGCU has been run-ruled so far in 2023.
Figueredo and senior designated hitter
Joe Kinker (
North Port, Fla./Venice HS) each finished with two hits. Ellis extended his unofficial NCAA record for consecutive games safely reaching base to 103.
Chase Alderman earned the pitching victory for Eastern Kentucky, with graduate
Max Rippl (
Fort Myers, Fla./Southwest Florida Christian Academy/Kent State) taking the loss
FGCU expects to start freshman
Justin Henschel (
Plantation, Fla./South Plantation HS) in Saturday's first game, with EKU set to counter with Rese Brown.
