FGCU caps the year in style, dominates Webber International 106-42

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball capped off the calendar year with a dominant 106-42 win Thursday over Webber International University at Alico Arena.

"Just an overall good team effort today," head coach Karl Smesko said. "Maca and Shekinah had great performances to lead us today. Kiki and Sofia made good decisions with the ball."

Coach Smesko stepped aside to allow associate head coach Chelsea Lyles to assume the head coaching duties for the night, and the Eagles did not disappoint.

Seven different Eagles contributed 11 or more points Thursday. Maca Retamales produced a team-leading and career-high 22 points, sinking a game-high six 3-pointers.

Brylee Bartram drained five threes for 15 points on the night, and Shekinah Guthrie had herself a night as well with a season-high double-double performance of 14 points and 14 boards.

FGCU (10-4) extended its home win streak to 21 consecutive games, the nation's sixth-longest active home winning streak. The Eagles have not lost a home game in 382 days.

FGCU knocked down 17 made threes, one shy of tying its season high of 18. The Eagles' 106 tally on the scoreboard also came up just three points short of tying the school record for the most points scored in a single game. The Green and Blue has now surpassed the century mark three times this season.

The Eagles came out firing, pouring in 34 points in the opening quarter. FGCU closed the second quarter on an 8-0 run and orchestrated a 21-4 run nearly over a seven-minute span in the period.

The Green and Blue led the Warriors by 35, 62-27, heading into the break - the most points FGCU has scored in a half this season.

FGCU continued to clamp down on the Warriors in the fourth quarter. FGCU allowed just two Webber International points in the final period for the making of a 24-0 run.

The Eagles forced a season-high 31 turnovers and scored 37 points in transition alone.

FGCU will shift its focus to Atlantic Sun Conference play in the new year as the preseason favorite Eagles open their conference slate on Jan. 4 at Jacksonville.
